Landscape Paintings by Sue Sommers
In this series I respond to scenes near where I live, places I experience every day and in every season. As an artist in the West, the big dilemma for me is not how to paint our landscape, but how to resist painting it. Because to give in and paint our landscape means that the very next problem is how. How to clearly communicate a personal experience of my place in/view of the West at that moment, in paint?
The uncertainty is the hook, of course. Every painting provides multiple chasms to fall into, with no way to know, until the end, whether I have finished it or it has finished me. Splat.
Then again, there’s always a chance I’ll make a painting that puts me squarely back in that moment. When it happens, I’m reminded how terror can be joyful, and exhilaration can be hair-raising. It makes me wonder how some people can say “it’s only art.”
