Sage Living Call for Artists
Applications will be accepted until January 24, 2020 or until the call fills to capacity, only the first 200 applications will be accepted.
St. John’s Hospital Foundation seeks five custom, site-specific artworks for Sage Living; a new residential senior care community located in Jackson, Wyoming. The art will contribute to a stimulating and imaginative atmosphere that supports creative engagement between residents, staff, and visitors. The commissioned artworks will create memorable first impressions, support wayfinding by contributing to the identity of each wing and provide residents with a sense of belonging and familiarity. The artworks will be designed to support sensory stimulation and to provide benefits to residents with a variety of cognitive abilities.
Interested artists working in Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah are invited to
submit their qualifications. Finalists will be paid to develop site-specific concepts that will be reviewed by an art committee who will select the best artwork for each location. Qualification packages should be submitted as soon as possible, as only the first 200 applications will be accepted. The opportunity will close on January 24, 2020 or when the call fills to capacity.
Finalists will be selected in February – March 2020 and will receive a concept development stipend of $500 to design a site-specific proposal for review by the art committee. Finalists will have from March through August 2020 to complete the design development proposal. Approved concepts and selected artists will then enter into a commission agreement with St. John’s Hospital Foundation to create and fabricate their work from September 2020 – May 2021. The construction of Sage Living is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2021. Delivery of final artwork is scheduled for the summer of 2021 and delivery dates will be updated with the construction schedule.
The Call to Artists will be listed using the Western States Arts Federation CAFÉ and Jackson Hole Public Art will facilitate the selection process. There is no cost to register your profile on CAFÉ and you can update it at any time. To register, visit www.callforentry.org. CAFÉ provides artists with an easy-to-use system to create a profile with contact information, to upload digital images of their artwork, and to apply to a number of open calls for entry at one time.
Two informational sessions will be hosted by Jackson Hole Public Art in the Center for the Arts Conference Room to help guide artists through the submission process or answer any questions artists may have about the project. The first session will be held on Thursday, December 12th from 12 – 1pm and a second information session will be held Tuesday, January 14th from 5-6pm, if the call hasn’t yet reached capacity.
St. John’s Hospital Foundation is seeking two or three-dimensional artwork for the reception spaces and major welcoming areas. All artwork must be made of durable, permanent media that is safe, can be cleaned, and requires little to no maintenance. Artwork should be properly scaled to its surroundings and should visually integrate into the overall design of the space.
Echoing St. John Hospital Foundation’s values, the artwork should forge a connection to place within Jackson Hole and the greater Teton Valley that the hospital serves. St. John’s Hospital Foundation seeks artwork that is realistic and recognizable in subject matter and that depicts iconic images highlighting Jackson Hole’s unique environment, history, and culture. Artwork should be soothing and therapeutic in nature and create a nurturing environment for patients. Artists should be sensitive to a patient’s perception of their environment and should consider scale, use of colors, patterns, materials that are easy to recognize and understand. Abstract artworks will not be considered for this opportunity.
Qualified artists will demonstrate:
- Artistic merit, originality and creativity as evidenced by prior artwork
- Professional artistic experience to fulfill the requirements of this project and the ability to undertake the design, creation and installation of the artwork within the timeline
- Appropriateness of materials, style, scale, and concepts in relation to the architecture of the building
- Creates a welcoming first impression that evokes a sense of calm, healing, wellness and excellence in service.
- Responsiveness expressed in the Letter of Interest
Finalist’s concepts will also be reviewed to meet “Evidence Based Art Selection” criteria to serve as general guidelines:
- Nature imagery that depicts healthy, fresh plants and flowers
- Landscapes with visual depth, open foreground
- Color palettes that are calming, natural, verdant colors
- Conceptual designs that reference ethereal movements of wind, water and air
